I'm not sure what I'm more excited to write about, Gilt or Chanel Bonfire. How I never wrote about Gilt is beyond me, but better late than never, right? Anyway, I'm specifically going to try and tell you about Chanel Bonfire, which was offered by Gilt.
Gilt = online shopping heaven. Period. Designer shoes? check. Hot sweaters for the men in your life? check. Trips to places I can only dream of visiting? check. Cultural Events? check. Which leads me to...
CHANEL BONFIRE by Wendy Lawless. I was having one of those work days a few weeks ago when K emailed me, "book party, Gilt, Jan 10, wanna go?" My answer was of course yes. So we synchronized our purchases, because God forbid one gets the deal and the other doesnt, and purchased our tickets.
Let me add something in here about Gilt -; GREAT SALES! Unless you're left out. Which has happened. Which means buy faster. Which also means 'woops there goes my savings account' so be smart ladies and gents, the self induced stress of purchasing under a time limit for fear someone else will get the goods is overwhelming. Be forewarned.
Moving back to the book party. K and I arrive at Toro Lounge, which is part of a restaurant Plein Sud, and immediately realize we are the youngest people onsite - but for the amazingly cool and hip Gilt employees. Typical. We always do this. Somehow she and I are 27 year olds in the bodies of old souls. We've accepted it. We beat out some real old souls for these tickets and we are LOVING the lounge, the music, and certainly the people watching.
(Insert, some horribly rude woman in a gold lamee shirt, sticking her fingers in the dip, licking and redipping....who ALSO chose to chat on her cell phone, yelling, while closing her bill DURING THE READING OF CHANEL BONFIRE!!!!) Really, some people should be trained better by their parents.
As we enter the lounge the incredibly cool Gilt employees greet us. We are immediately jealous of these individuals who get to work in a cool job, unless ourselves who would not describe our day jobs as cool. And trust us, we really do enjoy our day jobs.
We mingle with other guests, we watch gold lamee girl lick her fingers at the bar and order too much booze, and anxiously await the reading. Signature cocktails in hand (from VeeV - photo below) we are suddenly greeted by the introduction of Ms. Lawless and her publisher (equally cool job). And she begins to read the first chapter. We erupt in laughter.
You see, Chanel Bonfire is a book about Wendy Lawless' mom. Who was anything but nourturing. Anything but attentive. And certainly anything but stable. We all think our moms are crazy. We will all turn into our moms, to a certain degree, at some point. I personally hope I can raise my right eyebrow as high as my mom, and give that 'look' that instills the fear of all things childhood related. I also hope I have the emotional strength of my mom - I digress.
Wendy Lawless' mom... Not someone to look up to in hopes of growing up to be like her. Unless of course you want to be a drug addict, who is suicidal, and had a string of men constantly at her beck and call. If so, good luck. I'll anxiously await to be at your daughter's book reading in fourty years.
Wendy Lawless was fantastic. One moment you want to cry for her, but as she reads you think to yourself, "why? She managed to grow up and learn from these experiences and is an amazing member of society! She wants us to laugh with her." And we did. And we appreciated her story and humor. I personally thank her for writing this book.
I thank Gilt for KNOWING that K and I would be purchasing at the same time to be sure we could both go to the event. It was amazing! (But for the gold lamee heathen)
If you are visiting NYC you really should sign up for Gilt, you can purchase great NYC activities at a lower price, as well as clothes, shoes, accessories and much more to have waiting at your hotel; if they'll accept them. ;)
Until Next Time/A Bientot
Poulpy
